The Ganaraska Forest Horse Club (GFHC) has already held two well-received events for members and their steeds. On May 6th we held an education clinic at Trickle Creek Farms. Expert clini- cians included: Jim Higgs on Ground Skills; Roy Ionson on Saddle Fitting and Grand Prix Dressage champion, Trish Hardy running two equitation workshops with a number of horses and riders registered in each session. We had 40 par- ticipants and raised close to
$500 for the club. Proceeds from our fundraising events help offset our investment into forest improvements.
On May 12th we hosted 51 horses and riders at our first-ever Early Bird Ride through the East Forest. There was the option of head- ing off in a small group through well-marked trails or waiting for a guided tour. On both days the weather and camaraderie were sunny and warm! We encourage new memberships to the club and demonstrate the benefits, par-
ticularly if you plan to attend two or more events during the year.
June 2nd will be our annual Poker Ride through the Central Forest. This year, prizes include a $500 jackpot (based on 40+ riders) divvied up from First Prize at $150 to Fifth at $50. This event is one of our biggest fundraisers. Stay tuned for a report in the next article on our winners. July 21st the GFHC will be hosting a ride in the West Forest. See

My introduction to this club was in 2009 when I brought my 17.1 hand, 1800 pound percheron/standardbred cross to the Skills Ride. At five years old, after a year and a half of service, Brock (the Brontosaurus) got fired from the Toronto Mounted Police for what I politely refer to as “insubordination”. When I saw a flyer that referred to an obstacle course I decided to check it out. Due to his weight, I pull a European sin- gle horse trailer. I am often kidded about the hugest horse

over the course of about a two-hour ride through the for- est. Last year, while I attempted to photograph my mount and I going through the shredded shower curtains hung between two trees, Brock decided to save all those behind him from needless worry and pulled it down with his teeth.
