JUNE 2012 THE RIDER /23 Alice Sinkner And Kleio Horse Hair Jewelry By Kelly Bowers.

As a child in Czechoslovakia, Alice Sinkner was a kid who loved to draw and took the art classes she could find. As a teenager, she would have loved to go to college for illustration, but the college programs offered were limited in those years. Instead, she studied to be a midwife, and actually delivered several babies along the way.

But when her parents became caught up in the political turmoil of the day, plans changed. They ended up fleeing under the cover of darkness to Austria and eventually crossed the ocean and landed in Kingston, ON, Canada. This lovely area is still close to Alice’s heart but the move was a huge change and even more challenging because Alice did not speak english back then.

Gables.

Once her daughter was born, they headed back to Canada to raise a family. Work was found in Toronto with the ani- mation studio, Nelvana doing shows for Disney. Moving around a bit, Fer- gus, ON. eventually became home. When Kids Can Press came knocking, Alice’s career quickly evolved from ani- mator into book illustra- tor, which is more in demand with each success she has had over the years - and was the realization of her childhood dream. For the last five years, she has created backgrounds for twenty three Franklin The Turtle books. A cou- ple years ago, she when back to her roots, contact- ed a Czech publishing company and began doing books for them too. After acquiring an agent, she has even done books for companies in Korea and Japan.

to a single piece of jewel- ry. Alice once created a lovely bracelet containing the hair of nine different animals from one farm,

which can be seen pic- tured below. Kleio pieces are not only beautiful pieces of jewelry but also treasured keepsakes and

By the time this arti- cle is being read, Alice will have just returned from a related business/pleasure trip to Czech early June. This is the newest aspect of the animator/illustrator busi- ness woman who was once just a kid in Czech who liked to draw. CANADA’S BEST DEALS IN HORSE TRAILERS

This long journey also lead her away from the field of health care towards a career in the arts. Living in Canada where there were more educational choices, her passion for art was rekin- dled. Determined to go to school and learn to be an illustrator, she followed her childhood dream and graduated from Sheridan College in Classical and 3D computer animation. That quickly lead her to sunny California where she worked freelance for Hollywood and LA stu- dios as a pre-design and background artist. Her

artwork can be seen in many animated movies such as Rugrats, Franklin the Turtle and the Canadi- an feature animated movie, Anne of Green

A secondary busi- ness sprung up once she moved back to Ontario. Alice started Kleio Horse Hair Jewelry which pro- duces necklaces and bracelets composed of hair. The european tradi- tion of “Hair Art” can be traced as far back as the 11th century but this is definitely a modern twist to the original art. In the beginning, she was using human hair but when she started using animal hair, the idea really caught on. Several different types of animals have been used in her work such as donkeys cows and goats but the most popular is horse or pony hair. Horse owners collect long strands of hair from the tail of their horse and send it to be intricately braided, or woven actually, into a wonderful wearable keep- sake. All aspects of the bracelet or necklace is customized including the length and diameter as well as the utilization of hair belonging to the owner’s own animal. Each piece is custom made with sterling silver fastenings and beads, semi-precious stones set in silver, or have a piece of silver engraved with the name of the beloved horse. Sometimes more than one horse contributes
