President’s Message

FINALLY, Show season is underway once again, and it started off on a great note with a superb show at Fletcher’s Horse World for Mother’s Day weekend.

It was wonderful to see old friends and to check out the new horses acquired over the Win- ter months. There were some very impressive runs to set the tone for the coming season. The Reiny Season Clinic at Joanne Milton’s Rustic Meadows was another success, with seven riders and an impressive $841.05 raised in support of the O.R.H.A. 2012 marks the FIF- TEENTH year of the Reiny Season Clinic - kudos Joanne for your dedication over the years.

also well attended, and a big thank you goes to Mike Munroe for once again running the event and getting another group of members trained to scribe.

We are also looking at running a Judges Clinic this Summer, where you will learn from N.R.H.A. Judges how a run is scored, and we will also be offering an O.R.H.A. Judge certifi- cation at the same time. Watch the O.R.H.A. website for updates and details.

Heather Vaughn, this year’s Clinician, did a terrific job and the participants all enjoyed it and advanced their skills. The Scribes Clinic was

By the time you read this we will all be get- ting ready to head to Pickering for the first of their two shows this year, and it is exciting to have them back on the schedule. Hope to see you there.

Until then, safe sliding. Carol The Reiny Season Clinic

Volunteers were also signed up to cover various tasks from doing posters to writing arti- cles and taking photos.

Tickets were sold throughout the weekend for a pair of tickets to the Stacy Westfall Clinic at Five Star Ranch, with $72 raised and Sarah O’Grady the lucky winner.

The youth are looking forward to another fun and productive year.

What a great way to kick off the O.R.H.A. Show season - a terrific Show at Fletcher’s Horse World, complete with the traditional Sat- urday evening pizza party.

The weather was perfect right through from Friday until the end of the day Sunday, and the show ran like clockwork, as it always does at Fletcher’s.

It was wonderful to see old friends and catch up, and wow, what an encouraging number of new members trying out the sport of reining. We had a very impressive 16 riders in the Green As Grass class, 15 in Beginner, 16 in Rookie, 9 in Youth and 17 in the Non-Pro Class. A remarkable turnout for the first show of the year. Saturday’s show highlight was Tim Stanton’s 74 in the Novice Horse Open on Chex To Bee

Cashed, followed by a 74.5 in the same class on Sunday.

Sunday’s excitement continued with the Open Class, where Heather Vaughn and Show- time Gun tied with Tim Stanton and Chex To Bee Cashed with a crowd pleasing score of 75.5, which also made Heather Intermediate Open Champion.

A huge thank you to John and Sharon Fletcher for putting on the show, to Berenice Fletcher and her daughter for running the show office, Lloyd Diehl for doing a first class job as announcer, and Mike Munroe for being the N.R.H.A. representative and dealing with the various glitches that happen at any show. A tip of the hat to each of you.

We are looking to put together a 25th Anniversary Commemorative Book, and so would like to receive your photos and stories. If

It’s that wonderful time of year when the horses finish their shedding, the farrier gets called for sliders, the show tack gets polished and spurs are back on your favorite pair of comfortable cowboy boots. But nothing signifies the beginning of another exciting show season more than Joanne Mil- ton’s “Prepare for the Reiny Season” Clinic. Now into her 15th year, Joanne has always hosted and donated all proceeds to the ORHA, this year raising over $840. Her kindness and passion for rein- ing is evident as she welcomes all newcomers and repeat participants.

This year’s clinic featured the very talented Heather Vaughn, who placed 11th in the standings found in the Quarter Horse News Magazine. Highly qualified, she completed an intensive 4 year Equine Program at Morristown College in New York. Thanks also to the Fletchers of Fletcher’s Horse World for giving her up for the weekend.

Attending the Clinic were Gail Gimpelj of Guelph on Tag (Mr. Holly James). Marlene Keating of Guelph on Twister (Rustic Won New Twist), Gillian Joyce of Hillsburg on Calvin (Rustic Reflect Olena), Phillip Lorimer of Mississauga on Angie (Flash My Show Tips), Liz Turnbull of Milton on Kat (Sabres Roan Gal), Sherry Wilding of Toronto/Shelburne on Matt (Rustic Matador) and Rufus as our cheering committee. Larissa Brown came all the way from North Bay with Owen (Ohdanadoc). and Jasper took it all in stride and rested under the trailer.

The participants were quite a diverse group of reiners and horse enthusiasts. Everyone arrived excited about the day, with a willingness to learn. We were blessed with a beautiful, sunny and warm weekend. Dan Fletcher started the Clinic with an introduction of Heather and then assisted with the Clinic, making sure that everyone got a good start.

Heather was exemplary at dealing with our individual issues and challenges. She made it fun and informative. She challenged us and cheered with us and the time flew by. Lunch was a BBQ of hot dogs and hamburgers with some homemade salads and goodies. It was a great group, as we all worked together with encouragement and support. As Joanne exclaimed.”It’s not that you have any more problems than you had before - it’s just that now you can recognize them!!” Teaming up with the Scribes Clinic on Sunday was a good test of all the skills we had learned. Every one took their turn at a pattern, which was judged by Mike Munroe and scribed by our newly trained scribes.

It was a great time to meet new friends and catch up with old friendships. The camaraderie and passion of reiners is outstanding and I can’t wait to get the Show Season started. Thank you to everyone involved in making the Reiny Season Clinic a fabulous weekend to get back in the saddle.
