handling luxury garments requiring ultrafine type microns. For ultrafine, the maximum was 19 microns with speciality products geared for even lower fibre diameter. Luxury product ranges can also include fibre diameter up to, say, 26 microns providing it has relatively low SD of fibre diameter. The other drivers are that the fleeces must have very low levels of coarse fibres, very low levels of contami- nation, particularly cross colour contamination and guard hair and have appropriate staple length of around 75mm to 110mm for huacaya – the jury is still out for suri due to market contradictions.


In order to produce these beautiful fleece types,


the Premium Alpaca concept recommends a general breeding regime that encompasses the scientific principles of genetic improvement through direct selection of highly heritable traits. (Brien 2006, Kondinan 1998 and Hynd 1997). It also incorporates indexing of multiple traits such as combining breeding values for fibre diameter, fleece weight and standard deviation of fibre diameter (SD) so that a number of key fleece and body traits can be pursued concur- rently. These principles have been scientifically proven over time and form the basis of flock improvement in
