and their designers for the stage. “When the individual designs appeared on the catwalk, the audience were stunned by what they saw,” said Caroline. The four universities demonstrated their different styles – Edinburgh showed tailoring, Nottingham Trent produced four original knitwear outfi ts as did Winchester College while the University of Wales raised the bar still further by creating rich textiles and designs. “It was a diffi cult task to fi nd a winner but after some consideration our judge, Patrick Grant of Norton & Sons, selected three garments for special mention,” said co-organiser Caroline Roberts. The shortlisted items were Lily Mason’s elegant and
highly wearable box jacket, Cherelle Lloyd’s stunning evening dress and Rebecca Peattie’s colourful coat using Peruvian street art as her theme. Rebecca was the eventual winner of £500, kindly
presented by the Natural Fibre Company. Her sponsor herds were Meon Valley Alpacas, Northumbrian Alpacas, Imagine Alpacas and Childerley Alpacas who were also presented with a trophy sponsored by the Natural Fibre Company.

“The competition and fashion show were a fantastic opportunity for us, as young designers, to showcase our talents and varied skills. Working with alpaca breeders gave extra depth to our work and improved my understanding of this side of the industry – the whole competition has been very educational.
“The fashion show gave us even more opportunity to meet with the other designers and breeders, and see what else had been created – the outfi ts were all sensational, and incredibly inspiring. Each one was very unique, and highlighted how versatile alpaca yarn can be. Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the competition.”

“We were really impressed by the high standard across the board, and the wide variety of the work submitted from all the colleges taking part. Each students’ description of their research process to design development was fascinating, and was a great insight into how each approached the brief and process of designing their garment.”
