BAS policy

The case forchange A

BAS chairman Shaun Daniel explains the organisation’s proposal to allow members to operate in Europe.

t the AGM in March, held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, the BAS Board presented three special resolutions to be considered and voted on by the membership.

These were:

1. To update the Society Memorandums and Articles to bring them up to date and in line with the Companies Act 2006. This resolution was voted through.

2. To amend the Articles to enable the Society to operate in Europe. After some discussion the vote went against this resolution.

3. To amend the Articles to change the quorum for the AGM from 50 to 25. After some discussion the vote went against this resolution.

The Board was asked to provide further details

regarding the move towards Europe. This article is designed to answer the questions raised at the AGM and to invite further debate over this proposal.

Why open up to Europe? So why does the BAS need to open up to Europe, surely we are happy just operating in the UK? The answer to this is really straightforward – our industry is a global phenomenon and our fi eld of operation is

being limited by Society rules that prevent us working outside the UK. The recent World Alpaca Conference highlighted

the need for change. The European delegates were asking for BAS help and infl uence across a broad range of subjects. It was also clear that the rest of the European alpaca industry is starting to grow and the BAS has an opportunity to infl uence the development of these fl edgling societies. In the future, I would like to see individual breed societies across Europe operating as one and information and trade running smoothly. Opening up our rules to allow this has to be the way forward.

How much will it cost? How much will it cost to change the rules and open up the BAS to Europe. The short answer is nothing. Concerns have been raised that such a change could bankrupt the organisation but that simply can’t and won’t happen.

Our industry is a global phenomenon and our fi eld of operation is being limited by Society rules.
