BAS policy

Let the debate begin Part of the argument at the AGM was that the BAS is British, it should remain British and, therefore, we should have nothing to do with Europe. I cannot accept this as a reasoned argument. We have no intention of being anything other than the British Alpaca Society. British Airways do not change their name every time they leave British airspace. Neither will we. However, we do need to leave our airspace and support those members who are about to take off and those that are already in fl ight. Obviously some of our members are concerned

Why would we, as a Society, not put ourselves

in a position to formally help other societies and breeders to fulfi l their alpaca aspiration? Why would we not want to participate in pan-european alpaca initiatives? Why would we not want to support our members’ initiatives outside of the UK? We are rapidly becoming a pan-european alpaca community, so why would we not want to actively participate in developing the infrastructure to the benefi t of our membership? Why, with the amount of hard earned experience gathered in the past 15 years, would we not want to play a proactive rather than a reactive role in future European alpaca initiatives?

about changing the Objects to enable the Society to formally operate beyond the UK. We would like to hear a reasoned and logical argument as to why this is such a concern. We, as a Board, would like to understand these concerns. Let the debate begin and let’s conclude it this year because the alpaca in Europe is gathering momentum and unless we decide which path to take, we will be sidelined and remain forever reactive as the alpaca marches on. Finally, it was a little surprising that Special

Resolution 3 was not passed, especially as the members present at last year’s reconvened AGM asked for the resolution and wanted the quorate number set at 25. The fi nancial implication to the Society for each reconvened meeting is approxi- mately £1000. I hope that we can bring these resolutions back to the membership at the earliest opportunity.

The alpaca in Europe is gathering momentum and unless we decide which path to take, we will be sidelined.
