BAS policy

in the UK. The UK is already part of Europe and we are subject to European law. I appreciate that some members are worried about the continuance of the Society but please rest assured that there is nothing in the proposal that would prevent the Society from continuing.

Why not leave Europe to do its own

thing? Of course we could, but then we have no intention of trying to take over any of the European countries’ registries or rules, or enforce any systems on them. We want to be able to work in harmony with them and right now, bizarrely, we can’t. The rules won’t allow it. It seems ridiculous that we cannot assist them, work with them or be involved in their development and training because our rules prevent it from happening. The World Alpaca Conference highlighted

widespread frustration and there were many passionate pleas from the European countries asking for cooperation with the UK. We can help, but

outside the rules. We can train, but outside the rules and umbrella of the BAS.

Is this just a registry matter? No it is not, it is only a part of it. We have no intention of changing the registry or providing a back door into the UK for alpacas that would not ordinarily pass screening. The screening rules stay the same. This is about the ordinary BAS membership and their aspirations, coupled with the BAS response to those aspirations. A growing number of UK breeders are making

contact with Europe and the breed society should be supporting, not hindering them. Equally European breeders are already here in the UK and looking for good alpacas, good training and good ideas. We, the BAS, need to keep pace with these changes. We have been breeding alpacas in the UK for a

lot longer than our European counterparts, so it is inevitable and understandable that they will look to the UK for experience, training and guidance to avoid many of the pitfalls we have encountered along the way.
