Show News A professional photographer (Harvey Brown,
Blackberry Alpacas) was hired to take shots throughout the show and also to provide the audience with moving images of the judging. Large television screens dotted around the arena relayed live action footage of the judging as it happened. Although the screens were perhaps not ideally situated, the idea and execution of this ground- breaking method of involving the audience will, no doubt, be refi ned and used again. An improvement on last year saw all the alpacas penned in the main arena which meant that everyone could be involved in the action from start to fi nish. A late decision was made by the committee to
switch from two show rings to one due to the relatively low suri entries. Unfortunately this had the effect of making both days very long. This was particularly noticed on the Sunday when the huge clearing up operation was beginning as the alpacas were still being judged. I am sure that this will be remedied next year and a timely fi nish will ensure the champions get the attention they undoubtedly deserved. Most competitors attended a buffet dinner on the
Saturday evening, giving everyone a chance to chat about the day’s events in a more relaxed atmosphere. Although it was a fabulous show with impressive
technology and an excellent number of entries, lessons have been learned and next year the South West Alpaca Group Spring Show will undoubtedly be even better.

fter an absence of one year, during which the Heart of England Alpaca Group ran the BAS National Show, the Spring Alpaca
Fiesta returned in 2012.
It is one of only two stand-alone alpaca shows run on behalf of the BAS. Held in the Blackdown Buildings at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, organisers welcomed breeders from as far afi eld as Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lancashire as well as a good quota of breeders from the Southern Counties. There were over 250 alpacas entered, both huacayas and suris, for the judge, Nick Harrington- Smith, ably assisted by his apprentice judge, Melanie Douglas, to place.
The buildings, although ideally suited to alpacas with their thick
fl eeces, proved way too cold to all but the hardiest of exhibitors, who would never have imagined, that at the end of April, they would be in near fl ood conditions with a temperature just above zero.

The start of the show was delayed on Saturday to allow the exhibitors to try and dry their animals after the torrential rain of Thursday and Friday. There were a few trade stands and the new BAS trailer to brighten up the show and they proved of interest to members of the public who braved the weather. One of the trade stands proved very popular with some exhibitors when word got round that it contained a heater.
