Western Australia’s Premium Alpaca – making a difference
The Rivergum Rise and Encantador alpaca studs in Western Australia (WA) are having a huge impact on breeders, producers and processors of alpaca fibre around the world. Co-founding the WA Premium Alpaca Group in 2010 and exporting the first 5 bales of fibre in 2011 has had a profound affect throughout the world with similar Premium Alpaca groups now being formed and finding success in marketing their fibre and realizing much higher returns. The WA group followed up again this year exporting a further 4 bales which was sold off market to the same buyer who was extremely pleased with the first consignment. It has been processed into exquisite products of extremely high quality due to the consistency of the Premium Alpaca. Low variation in micron between the fibres and along the fibres is the key to producing Premium Alpaca fibre. Our successful Premium Alpaca approach is founded on paying close attention to: • what fibre processors and buyers’ value and need. • breeding with alpacas that have the genetic traits that produce Premium Alpaca fibre.
• fibre test results and data that provide both the information you require to make breeding decisions and verification that your breeding decisions are producing the right results (refer to our Winter article “Insight” – getting more from your fibre testing”).
• quality processes in the shearing shed and attention to detail with shed preparation, shearing protocol, superb classing, testing and transport.
• what the fibre processors need to produce great alpaca products rather than just by the results of alpaca shows (refer to our Autumn article “Beyond the show ring... it’s all about the fleece”).
The Encantador and Rivergum Rise breeding programs in place for over a decade have selected animals with the right genetic traits which are moderate to highly heritable to produce Premium Alpaca fibre. The result of these breeding programs is demonstrated by: • outstanding fibre test results from Paul Vallely at Australian Alpaca Fibre Testing (AAFT) which can be viewed individually or through “Insight”, and
• fibre buyers’ demand for Premium Alpaca produced by these genetics.
