Dubbing mixers are notoriously fastidious. One in particular (he’s one of the four we spoke to for page 28’s Mixing it Up feature, but I’ll let you guess who) berated an assistant for not creating the perfect mix of water pouring into a glass. “Make it sound sexy!” he demanded. Outside a dubbing theatre, such a request might seem a little ridiculous, but it’s that level of

attention to detail that wins Baftas, Emmys and RTS Awards. Because most people are inclined to watch TV rather than listen to it – and because of its position at the end of the post-production chain – the boss of one Soho facility referred to ‘the dark arts’ of audio. I hope the feature on page 28 will shed some light on what takes place behind the mixing console.
