Kelly McGonigal, PhD, is a psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University, and a senior teacher for the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education. She is the author of The Willpower Instinct and Yoga for Pain Relief.

Leah Weiss Ekstrom directs compassion education for the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University. She practices in the Tibetan tradition and has taught meditation in a variety of secular contexts for more than 10 years. She cofounded the Foundation for Active Compassion.

Paradigm Shift Then and Now: Building the Future Together

Many people believe we are on the brink of a paradigm shift of great magnitude—as great as the 17th Century’s Scientific Revolution which effectively removed the earth from its tyrannical reign at the center of the universe and set the stage for material science to reign in the minds of men. As so often happens in the course of his- toric developments, progress is made at the cost of something of value being left behind. Many have posited that in these early years of the 21st century, as we move forward into perceiving the universe not as a collection of distinct and inde- pendent parts but as a unified system of inter- connected and interrelated beings, that we have the opportunity to reclaim what was lost in the past. In this workshop we will explore this last major paradigm shift in human consciousness, discuss its implications for those living today, and together be active agents in ushering in a new paradigm.

The workshop will include talks by Ralph Abraham, dialogues between Ralph and Nina Wise, group discussion, and some movement and easy theater games led by Nina to loosen our bodies and minds and create group synergy.

Ralph Abraham chaos mathematician and theorist, is the author or coauthor of several math texts and three philosophical books. He is professor of mathe- matics at UC Santa Cruz.

Nina Wise is a performance artist and founder of Motion Theater, a form of autobiographical perfor-

mance. Her provocative and original works have been honored with seven Bay Area Critics’ Circle Awards and three National Endowment for the Arts fellow- ships.

Introduction to Gestalt Awareness Practice

Gestalt Awareness Practice is a form—nonanalyt- ic, noncoercive, nonjudgmental—derived from the work of Fritz Perls, influenced by Buddhist practice, and evolved by Richard and Christine Price. The work integrates ways of personal clearing and development that are both ancient and modern. To the extent that awareness is made primary, Gestalt Awareness Practice has a strong relationship to some forms of meditation. Emotional and energetic release and rebalancing are also allowed and encouraged. The emphasis is intrapersonal rather than interpersonal. Participants are not patients but persons actively consenting to explore in awareness. The leader functions to reflect, clarify, and respect whatever emerges in this process. The aim is unfoldment, wholeness, and growth, rather than adjustment, cure, or accomplishment. This introductory

workshop is both didactic and experiential. Utilizing group exercises, meditations, and dis- cussion, participants work with each other to explore ways of increasing our quality of aware- ness as well as working with what arises in the process. Open seat work may be included but is not the focus of the workshop.

Please note: Meeting times for this workshop are longer than the average Esalen workshop.

Knowing the Self through Understanding the Mind Pierre Grimes

Communications from the mind are as pro- found as they are utterly appropriate to our cir- cumstances, for while the scope of the mind is pervasive, its precision is always directed to what is personally and philosophically signifi- cant. During this workshop, we will explore a new paradigm that offers a profound under- standing of the way the mind functions and communicates with us for our benefit. The self is always seeking completion; hence, our choice of goals, the problems we face, the daydreams and fantasies we have, the seemingly random thoughts that occur during our meditations and the dreams that visit us in our sleep—each and every one of them is a doorway into the richest source of insights into our lives. What we dis- cover through these insights is that the mind itself continually provides evidence of its own goodness and intelligibility. The master crafts- man of these communications is called the Dream Master. Pierre Grimes has developed this path of self-discovery over many years. It has its roots in the Homeric/Socratic tradition. As we focus on our dreams and daydreams with the simple rules of this new paradigm, we are brought to an awareness that our everyday exis- tence can be the doorway to the profound and that what is often ignored can be the key to our inner development. Please bring writing materi- al and a small tape recorder for recording your dreams.
