Weekend of December 21–23

The Power of Mindfulness Mark Coleman

For thousands of years, people have cultivated mindfulness as a complete path to awakening. Contemporary research now reveals that mind- fulness greatly improves attention, reduces stress, and increases health, wellbeing, and capacity for happiness. What is true is that we can all learn to live with this mindful presence

today and greatly enhance every aspect of our lives.

Mindful awareness allows us to be attentive in the present moment with the quality of accep- tance, spaciousness, and equanimity. It is the foundation for living with wisdom and compas- sion and is the seed from which springs much joy, delight, and peace.

In this course we will explore the innate quality of awareness and what interferes with establish- ing this mindful presence. Participants will learn to cultivate it through accessible yet pro-

found meditations on the breath, the body, and how to work with feelings and thoughts that can often hamper our meditation wellbeing.

There will be periods of guided sitting and walking meditation, talks on meditation, and ample opportunity for questions and discussion. Suitable for beginning and experienced stu- dents.

This course can be taken on its own or together with Entering the Heart of Love, December 23- 28, for a seven-day immersion experience.

Loving Yourself Daphne Rose Kingma

You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve to be loved.

—Buddha

Contrary to the Jingle Bells culture, the holiday season can often be difficult and stressful, espe- cially if you’re feeling a disconnection from oth- ers or yourself. Although it has been said that we should love others as ourselves, out of all the forms of love, loving ourselves is often the most difficult. We don’t know how to do it. Sometimes we’re not even sure that we should love ourselves, and if there’s a way to learn how to do it, we’re often not sure just what that might be.

Contrary to what you may think, it’s actually possible to learn how to love yourself—no matter how wounded you’ve been, no matter how habitually hard on yourself you may be. In this simple but profound workshop, you can learn how to claim your own beauty, hold yourself in your own compassion, and treat yourself with kindly care. Through teachings, meditation, and exercises, we will explore the following topics:

• Why you need and deserve your own love • How we get lost on the path to self love

• The many (and subtle) forms of not loving yourself

• The four steps to self-compassion

What better time to reconnect (or finally con- nect) with the precious treasure that you are. Find true support during this often challenging time and receive the remarkable gift of loving yourself!

Please note: There will be a celebratory Christmas Eve dinner in the Esalen Lodge.
