F


or the vast majority of children in lower-income communities who lack access to summer learning opportu-


nities, not only can summertime be lonely and boring, it also sets them back academi- cally when the school year begins. This “summer learning loss” – a loss in students’ academic skills and knowledge during the summer months – contributes directly to students falling behind academically, as well as to increased drop-out rates, risk of obesity and a widening of the achievement


gap between low-income and middle- income students. Luckily, summer learning programs


like Gilroy’s “Super Power Summer Camp” help combat “summer learning loss” and contribute substantially to chil- dren’s education. A vast body of research shows that students’ participation in sum- mer learning programs is a major factor in their academic success. This summer, thanks to an innovative partnership between the Gilroy Unified

School District, California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal- SOAP), Youth Alliance and the Mt. Madonna YMCA, hundreds of Gilroy youth will enjoy valuable academic enrichment in a fun setting at Gilroy’s highly-acclaimed Super Power Summer Camp. Funded by federal, state and private
