Theatre Notes Mr. Sally as the Mayor is the lynchpin of the evening and
he truly “struts and frets his hour upon the stage” with envi- able energy and a demonic pace. The toadying, wealthy landowners Dobchinsky (George S. Gemette) and Bobchinsky (Christopher P. Carter), bearded and dressed alike like twins, are delightfully harebrained. Handsome and charming, Mr. Hsieh commits entirely to the concept and is especially amusing as he drinks himself into falling down obliv- ion and then becomes giddily silly (Bugs again) when he woos the Mayor’s sullen daughter, a silent waspish Megan Putnam who provides a welcome island of calm amidst the stage chaos by standing stock still, communicating hostility with few words and smoldering eyes. The Mayor’s wife (flamboyantly cos- tumed, money-in-the-bank Ruth E. Stein) is a naughty, grasp- ing, middle-aged sexpot who fixes on Hlestakov as her object of desire. And Ronald Feichtmeir is smooth and droll as Hlestakov’s long-suffering valet Osip, the classic wily Scapino of the play. The show is well costumed by Mae Matos, well lit by Ben
Hemmen on an attractive, flexible set by Ron Gasparinetti. The Government Inspector runs through May 5 at Bus Barn Stage Company in Los Altos.
