t’s May! National Bike Month! Fill up your water bottle, strap on your helmet and LET’S GO! Go where?
Just look at the month!
5/1-31: Go ride your bike! Anytime! Anywhere!
5/5: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a bike ride. Other options? Climbers might want to check out the Mt. Charlie Challenge Bike Ride over in Scotts Valley while race fans will want to head up to Los Gatos for the annual Mike’s Bikes Cat’s Hill Classic.
5/10: Get rollin’ on the Eighteenth Annual Bay Area Bike to Work Day. After all, over one million Bay Area residents live within five miles of their workplace! (www.youcan-

5/12: Yep, the Twenty-first Annual I Care Classic returns to the land of Out & About, raising funds for the Lion’s Santa Clara Valley Center for the Blind and Sight Impaired. Ride Director Judy Froom informs me that organizers have made several route changes for 2012. Along with a retooled 100K, they’ve added a hilly 100-miler that features mighty Metcalf Road! (Fear not, the flat 100-miler is still an option.) Naturally, routes partake of some of the prettiest riding roads in Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister. Throw in their ever-popular t-shirts, BBQ lunch and post-ride massages, and you can see why this event is a South County favorite.

5/13-20: The pros hit the Golden State at the seventh annual Amgen Tour of California. On May 14, they scream into Aptos; the next day, they rocket out of San Jose. Bring the family and pick up some pre- or post-ride auto- graphs.
5/14-18: National Bike Week! Are you ready to join me? Over half of the U.S. population lives within five miles of work! Give it a shot, but be ready; a San Diego Association of Governments study showed that 20% of folks “...who participated in their Bike to Work Day promotion as first- time commuters became regular bike commuters.”
As a confirmed cycle commuter myself, I need to add that the best thing about

ditching the car isn’t the additional miles you can accumulate for your bicycle log; instead, it’s knowing that you get to ride your bike twice a day!
5/15: To coincide with the aforementioned Stage 3 start of the Amgen TOC, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group will host the “King of the Mountain” Charity Cycling Challenge. Funds generated will be donated to anti-child- hood obesity programs in 250 elemen- tary schools throughout Silicon Valley.
5/16: Every year, the third Wednesday of May is reserved for the Ride of Silence, an event honoring those killed in bicycle/motorist crashes.
5/18: National Bike to Work Day! If you choose just one day to give bicycle
