Tips for Accidents Involving Teeth By Dr. Erika Gabor T
he best way to avoid an accident is to be proac-
tive. Unfortunately, no matter how proactive we are, accidents still happen. As the weather improves and children play and participate in contact sports outside, accidents do happen. Remember always
remain calm, assess the injury and act accordingly.

HERE ARE FEW TIPS WHAT TO DO WHEN AN INJURY OCCURS TO YOUR TEETH
Knocked Out Permanent Tooth Find the tooth. Handle the tooth by the
crown, not the root portion. Rinse the tooth but do not clean or handle the tooth unnecessarily. Inspect the tooth for frac- tures. If no sign of fracture reinsert it in its socket. Have child hold the tooth in place by biting on gauze. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, transport in a cup containing the child’s saliva, milk or water. The tooth may
also be carried in the child’s mouth. The child must see dentist immediately.
Broken Tooth Rinse dirt from
injured area with warm water. Place cold compress over face in the area of the injury. Locate and save any broken tooth fragment. Immediate dental attention is necessary.
Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek Apply ice to
bruised areas. If there is bleeding apply firm but gentle pressure with a gauze or cloth. If bleeding does not stop after fifteen min- utes or it cannot be controlled by simple pressure, take to hos- pital emergency room.
OTHER EMERGENCY CONDITIONS
Bleeding After Baby (Primary) Tooth Falls Out Fold a pack of clean gauze over bleed-
ing area. Have child bite on the gauze with pressure for fifteen minutes. This may be repeated once. If bleeding persists, see dentist.
Cold/Canker Sores Many children occasionally suffer from
“cold or canker” sores. Usually over the counter preparations give symptomatic relief. Because many serious systemic oral diseases mimic or begin as sores, it is important to have a dental evaluation if these sores persist.
