Europe and South Africa. During this formative time, I met many great people on casino floors and at gaming shows that I am now honoured to call friends, and without whose help and support Eurocoin would not have succeeded in the way that it has.

What is your style of management? My background prior to joining Eurocoin was both the teaching and coaching of a wide range of sports, and this has undoubtedly influenced my approach to management and team-building at Eurocoin. The hard-working Senior Management team at Eurocoin is widely admired across the industry for their professional approach and internally everyone works well together in a collaborative approach. We believe firmly in empowering our talented group of people to make the best possible decisions for our clients. I still hold the role of Coaching Development Manager at the amateur section of Saracens Rugby Club, and coached the Club’s first tour to Argentina in 2011, so I’m never tired of learning new skills to try and apply.

What do you see as the main issues facing the UK Casino industry today and over the next 5 years? Undoubtedly, and has been often noted, the industry needs to ensure that it continues to be innovative in order to successively bridge the ‘technology demographic’. The world of entertainment has dramatically changed in many ways in the past decade; gaming needs to ensure it continues to evolve, producing attractive and innovative solutions for the ‘i-Generation’.

The last 10 or so years have seen an ever-increasing range of slots & multiplayers that must have greatly increased the amount of components and equipment Eurocoin is now able to provide? Yes, absolutely correct. Eurocoin has a range of world-class supply partners who are the market leading technology suppliers in their sectors. These include 3M Touch Systems, TransAct Technology gaming printers, Motorola barcode scanners, Kortek TFT displays, and many others. As casino and VLT games have increasingly harmonised around a largely common component formula – twin TFTs, touchscreen, bill acceptor, ticket printer – this has enabled us to provide a far broader range of items to our gaming machine manufacturing clients. This trend, equally, has been excellent news for the casino and VLT operators, who are now able to return a wide variety of hardware to Eurocoin for service and repair, saving them both time and money.

What are the key attributes of Eurocoin that have been at the foundation of the company’s success? Eurocoin has now been trading actively for more

than 40 years, and it is a continuous source of pride to us that the company is recognised as a business where professional and personal integrity comes first. This philosophy underpins all of our activities and decision-making, and helps explain, I believe, why we have successfully built and maintained so many successful client and supplier relationships that have flourished continuously, some for 35+ years. Performance counts in Casinos that is not just in the performance popularity of slots, but in reliability and the minimisation of down-time that is augmented by a fast speed of repair. Few industries compare with the Casino slot floor for the importance of reliability.

What standards do suppliers need to meet before Eurocoin contracts to distribute their products? In today’s gaming machine business environment, there is no more important factor for a hardware supplier than component reliability and lifetime cost of ownership to the machine operator. At Eurocoin, we spend a great deal of time explaining the performance credentials of our major brands of hardware to both the manufacturers and operators alike, so that they can make an educated choice when designing or purchasing new machines.

Service and support are key requirements what is Eurocoin’s approach to this vital responsibility? As labour and transport costs rise, the cost of an engineer call out to a faulty machine will be counted in the €150+ category every time – much more if you have to replace faulty parts. Couple this with the loss of earnings during this period of machine downtime, and you quickly have a critical problem… At Eurocoin, we evaluate the field performance of our major components continuously; we have a custom-designed Service Module on our SAP system that tracks every piece of hardware returned from the field by our clients, and pride ourselves on a 5 day turn-around on items returned by clients for repair. Our E-Service division now services and repairs every major brand of hardware in gaming, employing more than 40 engineers across Europe, and processing more than 60,000 repairs and upgrades every year on client-owned components that are out of warranty. This is one of the largest casino and gaming industry service operations of its kind in Europe.

Has the casino industry ever asked Eurocoin to provide a specific type of product or equipment that hadn’t to your knowledge ever been installed in a Casino environment before? Yes, on numerous occasions, and this type of approach is very welcome. Part of Eurocoin’s ‘value-add’ for our gaming customers is our ability to add design, production and integration skills
