The Striker is also designed to accommodate the speciality equipment required for responding to aircraft incidents with customized storage units and compartments that house the aircraft fire and rescue equipment. Its high quality construction means less downtime for servicing compared to the facility’s previous trucks, although the older vehicles will be kept to ensure the airport maintains full aircraft firefighting response coverage when the Striker does require servicing to ensure there is no disruption to commercial aircraft operations.

The Oshkosh H Series Snow Chassis, of which YLW has purchased two, are multi purpose vehicles that can accommodate a number of attachments such as blowers and brooms to ensure that the runway and associated aprons and taxiways are kept in peak conditions. Its main 22-foot

sweeper is eight feet longer than the airport’s previous equipment so that fewer passes are required to clear the same size area. These units also operate effectively at speeds much greater than the current units. As a result, the work can be done faster between take- offs and landings, resulting in a more efficient workflow. From the roomy cab, operators have maximum visibility of the airport surfaces and obstacles.

Determining the specifications for both types of vehicles was a joint effort between the staff at Team Eagle and YLW Operational Crews and the City of Kelowna including Crew Captain Steve Smith; Airport Fire Chief, Neil Booth; Assistant Airport Operations & Fire Chief, Darrell Belgrove; Crew Captain Greg Bouwman; James Hall, Airport Operations Manager; Russ Piecowye,

Airport Mechanic and Lori Evans, Senior Buyer for the City of Kelowna. Staff also participated in intensive training regarding the operation and servicing of the vehicles with Team Eagle following the vehicles’ arrival.

“I am extremely proud of the entire team for working in collaboration to develop the specifications and requirements for what are very complex pieces of machinery. In working together they have obtained the best technology that modernizes our operations; an increase in productivity and reliability, ensuring the best delivery of services to the public whether it be in emergency situations or providing the best runway conditions for aircraft to land and takeoff on,” says Samaddar.
