SPRING TO EUROPE TRAVEL EXPO

As a Town Crier rang his bell and French music echoed through the terminal, one might think he had already been transported to Europe. Over 1000 people attended the second annual Spring to Europe Travel Expo at YLW on Saturday March 3.

Travel agencies, tour operators and airlines presented the very best European travel deals: holiday options including river cruises, coach tours, rail holidays, backpacking and bicycling tours.

“Flying non-stop to Europe is a ways off because there just isn’t the passenger volume to support it at this time,” explains Airport Director Sam Samaddar,“but with the work we are doing with airlines to develop greater connectivity and combined fees and tariffs, the process for travellers to fly from YLW to Germany and the UK is very smooth and that’s what we want to show at this event.”

With a minimum donation of five dollars, event attendees could enter their name into a draw to win one of four prizes: airfare for two on Air Canada to London, England; a $500 travel voucher with Transat Holidays; a two night stay at Sparkling Hill Resort

– a European experience in our own Okanagan backyard; or a $200 European travel voucher from Sun Country Travel. All proceeds from the draw were donated to Hope Air, the only national charity that provides free flights to financially burdened Canadians who are required to fly for vital non-emergency medical treatment. Kelowna is the #1 departure point for Hope Air in all of Canada – last year the organization arranged 780 flights through Kelowna International Airport.

The event collected a total of $3,560 in donations for support to Hope Air. “The funds contributed by people at the event translate into 21 flights for individuals and families in need,” says Hope Air Volunteer Pilot Braden Messenger of Kelowna, who was in attendance at the Spring to Europe event. “Hope Air very much appreciates the support of the Kelowna International Airport and everyone who attended. By being here, we were able to share how Hope Air’s free flights services make our healthcare system more accessible for all.”
