NICE, FRANCE
Nice, the capital of the French Riviera and a picturesque beach resort area is the perfect city for sun seekers to visit. France’s fifth largest city is easily accessible by flying from Kelowna with stops in Toronto and London before landing at Cote d’Azur Airport in Nice. Once you arrive, there is a great choice of accommodations, varying from hotels and bed & breakfasts, to furnished apartments, hostels and even campsites! With several major museums, monuments and churches in the area, history lovers will no doubt have a tough time choosing where to look first; but you won’t want to miss the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Cemenelum. Walking through the city, you will be able to enjoy the flower and produce markets and then share a picnic lunch in one of the numerous parks and gardens scattered throughout the city. For something a little different, you can go to a perfume workshop at the International Perfume Museum in Grasse, 28 km south west of Nice. Or visit Saint-Paul-de-Vence, one of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera; well known for its modern and contemporary art museum and great for shopping!
Located on the shores of the Mediterranean, there is no shortage of sports and activities for people to enjoy. The long list includes canoeing, kitesurfing, windsurfing and even scuba
diving. On land, you can partake in mountain climbing, cycling, or if you are a competitor, maybe you will consider the Ironman or the Marathon des Alpes- Maritimes. If you still have some energy for the evening, your choices of cuisine are endless. French and Mediterranean foods are bountiful, as are the refined gourmet international restaurants. After a great meal, the nightlife in Nice is alive and well, with several bars, discos and casinos to choose from. Nice has personality, is dynamic, lively and full of passion. BARCELONA, SPAIN
The capital of Catalonia, Barcelona is Spain’s most cosmopolitan city and is home to one of the Mediterranean’s busiest ports. From YLW, you can fly with Air Canada via YVR to LHR (London), continuing with British Airways to Barcelona, or travel via Seattle to Paris with Horizon/Alaska and Delta (operated by Air France). Once in the city, you will quickly realize that the Metro is the most efficient way to move around, though you can experience much of the city by foot as well. With a pleasant climate and sea breezes, Barcelona can be enjoyed year round. Another must see for any art lover would be the Picasso Museum, boasting more than 3800 works for visitors to appreciate. If shopping is more your style, you are in luck, because in Barcelona, and throughout Catalonia, hours of operation are normally longer than usual, giving you plenty of time to peruse the Barcelona Shopping Line, an area of high fashion and trendy looks. A short metro ride will lead you to Poble Espanyol, a small village that replicates different styles of houses and architecture of various parts of the country and where an array of specialty craft shops can be found. Barcelona is an ideal city to travel to with families as well, offering such attractions as the Zoo de Barcelona, several amusement parks including Port Aventura and the chance to visit outer space at CosmoCaixa. For those who would rather dance than rest through the evening, Barcelona is divided into ten nightlife areas, each offering their own flavour and style; including jazz, Latin, rock and the international electronic dance music.
