be coming from the ground up, focus on skill development and employee connectivity and provide opportunities for growth and increased responsibility,” explains Young.

Of the entire workforce, approximately fifty percent is recruited from the Kelowna area. “Having Kelowna as the foundation”, says Young, “enables the company to offer Kelowna residents an attractive wage, while keeping costs under control and providing our customers with top notch staff.” Young added that SAS is always looking for people with strong leadership skills, a positive attitude and high energy. MOVING FORWARD WITH SAS Growth and innovation is key for continual success in many companies today and SAS is certainly no exception. When asked about the plans that SAS has for its future, Morash was excited to share what the company is implementing for the Kelowna market, in particular. For starters, SAS is looking at ways of how to improve and streamline the current catering product provided to airlines, particularly for the destination carriers and winter charters. On a much larger scale, there are two other initiatives that are currently in the implementation stage and will be happening in the next year. “Our plan”, says Morash, “is to diversify from ground handling and move into other business modules, such as fueling and ground equipment servicing. We’d like to turn that into a revenue model in terms of providing equipment rebuilds and refurbishments for other carriers and companies, becoming the only ground service equipment rebuilder

and equipment wholesaler in western Canada. This is a great opportunity for the Kelowna airport and the community, creating employment and developing a centre in western Canada for the service of aviation equipment.” With respect to green initiatives SAS will convert about eighty percent of its fleet to electrically powered equipment.

Valuing the relationship with the airport, Morash says, “We are working closely with Kelowna Airport in this green initiative and will continue to build on our relationship through other opportunities involved with the Kelowna Airport expansion.”

To make all its expansion plans a reality, SAS has doubled its corporate office space in March 2012, having built out new offices and workspaces in the Airport Business Park adjacent to YLW. Chris Bayne of Gux Construction headed up the project; TOPS Telecom and Source Office Furnishings were two key suppliers who made it happen for SAS.

A CUT ABOVE THE REST When asked what makes SAS stand out as a service provider Young says: “We listen to our customers. One thing that we have focused on and that I have never lost sight of, is the personal relationship that one has with a customer. Maintaining good relationships with the top players in this massive global industry has been critical to our success.”

Noting that image and professionalism go hand in hand, Young says: “We want to create a seamless integration with the airlines we represent and contribute to the passengers’ flying experience by extraordinary service delivery and on- time performance. “
