Renowned University during the year UNIQUE HOTEL DURING SUMMER
Located right across from the airport in Kelowna, UBC’s Okanagan campus is renowned for its quality education and beauty. But did you know that between May and August each year, when most students are off on vacation, the campus turns into a professional Conference Center and Hotel? All lecture theatres, classrooms and catering spaces are available for meeting groups and the student residences are turned into hotel rooms with 24/7 front desk service.
“For the last fi ve years we have turned part of our student accommodation into hotel rooms with great success,” says Jen Neilands, Front Desk Manager with Student Housing & Hospitality Services. “Last season we had over 5,000 people stay the night with us. They are coming from all over Canada and the US, and we even had people from overseas.
Because of the rapid expansion of the university over the last couple of years, many new student residences were built, offering a variety of accommodation options. “When we talk about student accommodation, people still visualize the old–fashioned dorm rooms with the bathroom down the hallway,” says Neilands. “But nowadays you actually have the option of a studio or one–bedroom suite with a queen bed, private bathroom and kitchen, or a four–bedroom suite each with a single bed and fully furnished living room and kitchen. Our Okanagan Single Rooms have a single bed in each room and you only share a locked–off bathroom with the bedroom next door.”
Starting May 11 till August 19, 2012, you can experience UBC’s hospitality. “To reserve your room, just call our reservations line directly or you can go to our website and book online,” says Neilands. “And because we have over 600 hotel rooms, availability is typically not an issue.” Rates are not an issue either. Daily rate for an Okanagan Single Room is only $48 throughout the season! A Studio Suite starts at $89, a One–Bedroom Suite at $119, and a Four–Bedroom Apartment at $159 per night. Budget conscious travellers will fi nd great value for their money here!
UBC is part of the BC Approved Accommodations program.
“We are not a fi ve–star hotel, but all our rooms are clean, comfortable, and equipped with all the essentials,” says Neilands. ”The Sunshine Cafe on campus is open throughout the week for breakfast and lunch and there is a Tim Hortons and Starbucks on site as well. Our campus is also beautifully landscaped in summer with fl owers and a variety of walking trails. It is really a great place to stay!”
