Innocent’s environmental industry accolade

Packaging professionals have named ‘Innocent’ their most admired brand for its environmental approach to packaging according to a new survey. The survey, put together by

packaging trade show specialists easyFairs, questioned 289 packaging professionals, asking them a number of questions, of which one was to openly name a brand that they really admired for its green packaging approach. In response, 10 per cent suggested the Innocent brand, followed by Marks & Spencer (seven per cent) and Kenco (five per cent). Matt Benyon, managing

director at easyFairs UK and Ireland comments: “Innocent have made tremendous steps over the last few years in making their packaging better for the environment, from using food grade recycled plastic in their bottles, to making their cartons from 100 per cent Forest Stewardship Council certified material. They also have a very strong sustainable packaging policy in place.” He continues: “What

impresses me most, is that we asked all those surveyed to name any brand they like, so to have 10 per cent come back saying Innocent is quite amazing, and just shows how Innocent get things right in not

only the green packaging side of things, but conveying their green message across to its peers and consumers. A lot of companies are doing great things out there, just they don’t tell us, which is a real shame.” Indeed, over a quarter (27 per

cent) surveyed admitted that they were doing lots when it comes to environmental packaging but not shouting about it. However, when asked what is

driving their packaging decisions at the moment, top of the list was cost, with a huge 69 per cent stating this. Over half (58 per cent) also said that the tougher economic climate means they are less likely to introduce more environmentally sound packaging unless it saves them money as well. This is clearly indicative of a

battle between keeping costs to a minimum and improving environmental performance of packaging for most professionals working in the industry.Matt explains: “Our survey showed that 46 per cent are interested in greener materials, but it’s paying that bit extra for these materials that is the problem. It’s that catch 22. Companies need to keep costs down, but also understand the importance of having a proactive approach to environmental packaging.”

Looking towards

Chicago PACK EXPO International 2012 has reported that over one mil- lion net square feet and 1,300 exhibitors have been booked so far for the show, which is taking place in October in Chicago. PACK EXPO, according to organisers PMMI, is 2012's largest North American packag- ing and processing trade show. 46,000 attendees are also expected. “Reaching this mile- stone this far out from the show makes a statement about the role PACK EXPO plays in the realm of processing and packag- ing,” says Charles D. Yuska, president & CEO of show owner/producer PMMI.With its customer-centric approach, PMMI plans to take PACK EXPO International 2012 to new levels of success. “The approach uses targeted exhibit areas and edu- cation so attendees can create a show experience that meets their needs,” says Charles.

Closed Loop: "We need a cross-party

consensus" Take recycling out of party politics - thatʼs the message from Closed Loop Recycling managing director Chris Dow and a number of other leading UK recyclers and MPs as the deadline nears for the Defra consultation on recycling and recovery targets for packaging waste. The government is currently favouring the option of setting higher statutory targets for various waste streams in order to support the market and drive behaviour change. Chris Dow is supporting the suggested mandatory target of 57 per cent, but in addition is calling for cross- party consensus in order to create a stable, long term market for recycling.“The consultation presents an exciting opportunity for our industry to work together to create a leading edge position,” says Chris. “However, as a valuable manufacturing sector set for growth, the recycling industry should be the focus of cross party support in order to maintain stability for the future.”
