FLEXIBLES First paper produced
SAICA’s new recycled paper mill in Partington has produced its first paper - ahead of schedule - following successful trials of the company’s Paper Machine 11 (PM11). The production of SAICA’s first ‘sellable’ paper at Partington marks the return of the paper industry to Trafford, and the beginning of a new chapter in British papermaking. On Sunday 15th January, PM11 successfully produced paper for the first time, with paper running through the whole machine and paper reels being processed along the whole line. Three days later, on the 18th, the first sellable paper reels were produced and tested, leaving the mill and reaching the first customers shortly afterwards. The £300 million recycled paper mill - SAICA’s first in the UK and reportedly the first ‘new’ containerboard paper mill in the UK for decades - will produce 400,000tpa of 100 per cent recycled containerboard each year. Commenting on the success, Francisco Carilla, industrial projects director, said: “We’re obviously delighted to reach this significant milestone – the company’s first reel of sellable recycled paper made in the UK from UK recovered papers. However, this is not the end. We continue to work hard to improve the running of the machine, increasing its speed, broadening the range and perfecting the paper we produce at Partington. Federico Asensio, deputy Managing Director, SAICA PAPER commented: “The cooperation between the project and operations teams on getting PM11 to this stage has been a success. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everybody involved in the project for their professional and personal efforts, especially to those employees we’ve temporarily relocated for training, construction, assembly and start-up purposes. Our commitment to our customers means that we will continue to work hard in our state-of-the-art mill to deliver containerboard that sets the standard for performance papers in the UK and Europe.” PM11 is the final part of SAICA’s plan to become an integrated player in the UK, providing a closed-loop solution for the
manufacture of environmentally friendly, performance papers and corrugated packaging. New and existing SAICA customers can call 0800 849 1117 for more information on PM11. For more information visit

Stora Enso’s newLumiLiner Wrapping a dazzling smile
National Flexible have helped to brighten smiles with the supply of a printed flexible packaging film used in the production of sachets for the famous Beverley Hills Toothpaste brand. The unusual application saw National Flexible’s technical team working closely with a well-known sachet machinery supplier to specify, test and produce a bespoke laminate film suitable for use on a multi-lane sachet packing machine, which was used to pack the sachets of the Beverley Hills Toothpaste. The film needed to have excellent seal integrity, especially under pressure, as it was important that the sachets were able to deliver a measured dose of the toothpaste without any bursts or seal failures. “We had to run extensive trials on the packing machine prior to commissioning to ensure that the film would stand up to the rigorous conditions,” said National Flexible’s Marketing Manager, Andy Smith. Stora Enso, in close collaboration with producers of boxes and corrugated packaging, has developed a new liner. With a basis weight of 90 g/m², Stora Enso say that this new liner combines the softness of lightweight paper with the bulk and tear resistance of significantly higher weight paper. LumiLiner is a white, one-side coated paper that is produced at Stora Enso’s Uetersen mill, Germany. According to the company, it features outstanding flatness, excellent smoothness and good ink holdout which supports vibrant graphics in corrugated board printing in offset and flexography (post-print). Also, LumiLiner is reported to be equally suitable for pre-printing of corrugated material in both printing methods. The material also offers high opacity, contains no optical brighteners and is suitable for the production of food packaging, says Stora Enso. Another special feature, says the company, is LumiLiner’s adhesion-friendly reverse side, which permits economical application of adhesive. For more information call 00 49 4122 719 685, email
