Now in our 19th year! Is your cam belt going to cost you a fortune?
We don’t want to scare you, but if your cam belt breaks, your engine is likely to suffer extensive damage and it’s going to cost. It’s why manufacturers are so strict about how many miles
your cam belt will last for. Let’s see why.
At the top of every engine, there are small upside-down mushroom kind of shaped pieces of metal called valves. They open and shut in sync with the pistons going up and down to allow fuel in and exhaust gas out. The cam belt links the valves to the pistons - when it breaks the pistons can run into the valves and do a lot of harm. The net result is we’ll have to take the engine apart to fix it!
Whenever you buy a pre-owned car we strongly advise you to establish when the cam belt was last changed. Request to see the factura for the work. If you can’t find any evidence, it’s advisable to assume that the cam belt needs changing.
Get it done as soon as possible. If you do find out when it was changed, ensure you know when it needs changing again.
Costs are relative. It’s actually not that expensive to get a cam belt changed – but it can be quite costly to get the damage repaired. Recommended intervals vary but 100 thousand km is typical.
If your cam belt does break, your car will most likely turn over but won’t start. So if your car gets towed in, it’s one of the things we’ll check.
If you’re at all unsure about your car, contact us and we’ll advise you how
to proceed. As we said, this really is one case where it’s better to be safe than sorry! In fact we’re here to help and advise on any issue, and don’t forget, we give a FREE roadside check, it makes safety sense.
