Technology Terminology- Feeling Confused? by Mark Trowbridge CEO 2020tel, 968 971 818.
Last month we spoke about the worldwide explosion of Smartphones and the impact they will have on our daily lives. This month I am going to talk about the terminology associated with Smartphones, how to get the best from having a Smartphone.
When thinking about changing to a Smartphone the question inevitably is …which one?
After all, there are lots of phones to choose from but the terminology surrounding them can sometimes be confusing. Words like Android, Blackberry, Windows and Apple, instantly come to the fore.
As with your home PC there are different Smartphone manufacturers; HTC, Nokia, Samsung, Blackberry, Apple etc. These manufacturers produce different models like the Samsung ‘Galaxy’, the HTC ‘Wildfire’ or the Apple ‘iPhone4’.
Unlike a PC, where you can choose the operating system (eg Windows 7) – the bit that controls what all the buttons do and your interaction with it - each phone is pre-configured and installed with a specific operating system.
Each phone/ operating system is a matter of personal choice but the fastest growing operating system is Android which is supplied by Google, and 7 out of every 10 new phone models released now come with Android pre-installed. Part of the reason for this massive Android explosion is that Google operate an open door policy for developers to provide apps, which has culminated in some 150,000 free apps being made available. This brings us nicely onto the next most popular term in the Smartphone world – “Apps”.
Apps – a software program/ application much like ‘MS Word’ or ‘Excel’ is to your home PC - is a software program that you use on a mobile device. So why should Apps be important to you? It might interest you to know that in a recent global survey it was found that ‘making calls’ was only in the 4th spot for ‘what do you use your mobile phone for?’
Using Apps can help you in numerous ways. You can now keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues in a multitude of ways, whilst on the move, instantly, and without the hassle of powering up a laptop! There are literally hundreds of thousands of apps available to satisfy all of your hobbies, pastimes and interests.
As the use of Smartphones and Apps grows so does the dependence on mobile internet. To get the most from your Smartphone you really need to look at finding a provider who can offer unlimited internet or at least a package where you are not worrying about the cost every time you open up your favourite app or receive an email, a photo or video.
