Home & Garden

Contemplative If minimal is your middle name and you are happiest in a simplistic setting, then the neutrals of grey, beige, taupe and ivory will work best as your background. However a

complete lack of colour can be less than inspiring. Imagine a church setting, a space of quiet strength and contemplation, invariably embellished with a vibrantly coloured stained glass window. In our own homes we can translate this to a vibrant piece of art in an otherwise neutral environment, creating a thought provoking focal point.

Dynamic Energetic, electric, dramatic and powerful colour combinations create a dynamic mood. There are no soft colours here, and its for those who prefer contemporary, sophisticated looks to traditional. These schemes involve chrome yellows, Ming greens and crimson reds, metallic finishes, angled geometrics and strong contrasts, usually bouncing off background combinations of black and white. Think of vividly contrasting, multifaceted jewel tones and your dynamic scheme will create a mood of high energy, high drama and high excitement.

Romantic A herb garden, a delicious whiff of baking bread, a sense of intimacy – this is the romantic mood, nostalgic, sentimental but never “cutesy” or contrived. Romantic is weathered pine and wicker

combined with damask or lace, of country living, the soft colours of pressed flowers, dried roses and muted colours that delight the senses and soothe the soul, all with a loving a thoroughly homey touch. Romantic colour moods are not too deep nor too pale, too hot or too cool but somewhere in- between, a more sophisticated take on mid tones imagine the subtle graduations of a fading hydrangea at summers end.

Sensuous Rich, dominantly warm and luxurious colours, leaning toward the exotic, creating a room Lawrence of Arabia would have loved! A sensuous scheme creates a sultry room that tempts you with its opulence and plushy textures; the perfect setting for an Oriental carpet or a richly upholstered chaise lounge.

Not for the faint hearted, mixtures of robust reds, rich browns, burnished gold, indigo blues and hot pinks make up the sensuous colour scheme as well as the spicy tones of curry and paprika and of course, jet black.

Room for Improvement At this point consider each room in your house and the mood you would like to evoke in them. Try just adding a few accessories to see how the addition of colour changes the feel of the room. Or if you are feeling brave then jump in and use all you have learnt about your personal style to change the scheme and create a room that truly reflects you, your personality and everything you love. But most of all, have fun!
