FINE ART PREVIEW
USING A COMBINATION OF CURVACEOUS FIGURES AND GOSSAMER FABRICS GARY BENFIELD DRAWS THE VIEWER INTO AN INTIMATE AND SENSUAL WORLD.
Gary is a versatile artist whose work is characterised by style and technique rather than by subject. When he first set up his London studio he concentrated almost entirely on figurative work, and his new collection returns to this preoccupation with three exquisite representations of the feminine ideal. Aurora, Ella and Beatrice are each named for their qualities of luminous beauty and joy: Aurora is the ‘goddess of the dawn’, Ella the ‘ethereal beauty’
BEATRICE
and Beatrice the ‘bringer of delight’. Each is set against a soft, sepia backdrop, the tone reminiscent of Leonardo’s sketches, defined only with pencil and a slight highlight of colour, and is then hand embellished with gold leaf creating highlights that are both elegant and subtle. Although Gary’s work has such an aura of calm his
studio is a place of great vitality. His work is spontaneous and this is reflected in the energy of his lines and the dashes of colour. He paints rapidly and discards many of his paintings and drawings, keeping only those he feels are perfected in their conception to work on and finesse into a finished composition, never ploughing on with something that doesn’t feel right from the beginning. Gary’s is fast establishing a reputation as an artist of genuine substance, and his work can be found in collections all over the world.
