phillipbissell

With the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games just around the corner, London is stepping into an even brighter spotlight than usual, and as art famously imitates life, it is becoming an increasingly popular subject for artists. But amongst the many city scenes, there are a select number that stand out, and in the case of Phillip Bissell, turn heads. Phillip’s powerfully expressive

cityscapes radiate with life and vitality. He is intrigued and fascinated by the dynamic intensity of lines and forms to be found in cities and the way a mass of rooftops, windows and juxtaposed buildings seem to vibrate against one another in exciting and unusual ways. Initially he was interested in conveying this energy through use of colour, but recent journeys to some of his favourite cities opened his eyes to a wealth of possibilities of focusing more on line as an expressive tool. The use of lines have proved a highly effective way to visually describe and transcribe the latent energy inherent in these cities. The addition of mostly flat and uncomplicated skies adds contrast and complements the whole. Born and brought up the West Midlands, Phillip was always fortunate in being surrounded by loving and encouraging parents and friends. He loved classical music and films, especially those set in exotic locations and describes himself as an avid and passionate world traveller long before he actually went anywhere more far-flung than his local park. Interestingly it was through film that he began to consider the idea of composition; the positioning of elements and the use of colour have come directly from watching how directors have composed their shots. Phillip favours acrylics for their quick-

drying properties. He has always enjoyed the feel of the brush on canvas and tried to convey the excitement he feels when engaged on a piece of creative work. He is never afraid to radically alter his approach if the subject demands it; he has painted for as long as he can remember and in many different ways according to where he has been on his life’s journey.

“PAINTINGS SHOULD LIVE AND SHOULD IMPART SOME OF THAT LIFE AND ENERGY TO THE PERSON VIEWING THEM.”
