The work of Danielle O’Connor Akiyama has always turned heads, but her new statement collection makes a whole new impression on the viewer. These exhilarating florals are overlaid with a stunning high gloss resin which makes the scarlet blooms fairly dance off the canvas.
Danielle herself has been delighted with how the presentation can enhance the effect of a painting. “While colour and composition are at the root of my work, I have learnt that the finishing touches can make a huge contribution to the overall effect of a piece. Highlighting each image with this wonderful gloss means that they hold and reflect the light in a completely different way, and this has made me look at my own work through new eyes.” Danielle has always loved to paint
flowers, and as a young artist she portrayed botanically accurate versions on canvas. The flowers in these paintings however are no longer realistic representations, but have been abstracted to more completely reveal the raw emotion that she wishes to portray. She has described then as part of a lyrical dreamscape, a channel to her interior world.
