Peter Rodgers has a distinctive style that brings to life some of the world’s most vibrant cities with a population of rain-swept, umbrella toting figures hurrying along slick pavements which reflect the lights of the city back out of the canvas. The creative process is
not what one might expect when looking at Peter’s strong, bold palette. Surprisingly he paints almost exclusively in watercolour which he finds an exciting and sometimes even unpredictable medium. For Peter watercolour lends itself to his
subject because of its fluidity. It has a transparent quality that makes it ideal for rainy streets and reflections in the layers of water on the pavements and sidewalks of the world. Strongly influenced by the watercolours of John Singer Sargent and Croatian artist Joseph Zbukvic, Peter believes the creation of atmosphere is central to his work. Much of this atmosphere emanates from representations of wind and rain, light and dark, and above all mist and shadow. He believes that watercolour allows him to give an almost tangible edge to the weather, thus allowing him to create the particular mood he is seeking.
