IT’S SO GOOD IT’S SHOCKING!

Dr Ian Vasey is a keen sportsman who had

suffered from various achilles and shoulder tendon injuries. Ian has managed them

reasonably well over the years in his own Chriopractic clinic being treated by

his colleagues. Last year Ian discovered the powers of Shockwave therapy!

In his own words, ‘It was quite simply an amazing treatment in its simplicity and execution’.

his is the future of muscle/ tendon and ligament injury diagnosis. Ian has a top of the range portable

machine which he uses alongside the in-house ultrasound machine. This gives an immediate diagnosis of soft tissue injuries usually only available at Nuffi eld or Mount Stuart Private Hospitals or after a 6 week wait on the N.H.S.

Tribial Stress Syndrome

So what is ESWT? (Extracorporeal shockwave therapy) Is a new alternative therapeutic method based on technology generating non-focused shockwaves, a so called “ballistic principle”. The pulses are transferred via a convex surface on the applicator resulting in a radial or conical dispersion of the energy in every single shockwave. The increase in pressure in the tissue is built up very quickly resulting in a high energy level and appropriate energy dispersion in the tissue.

EFFECTS There is ongoing extensive research on the phenomenon; increased blood circulation, local anaesthetic effect and improved tissue

metabolism are documented effects. The treatment stimulates and effectively supports the underlying mechanisms of the body’s self repairing abilities. It is common to experience immediate pain relief and thus improved mobility.

TREATMENT A thorough clinical and functional examination is performed before any treatment is initiated. Ultrasound diagnostics and MR can be good supplements to diagnosing and localizing tissue changes, i.e. where you have calcifi cation in the joints and adjoining structures (ligaments, tendons and muscles). Once a diagnosis has been made the Shockwave can be applied precisely to the injury site and checked later for revascularisation, which is an excellent indicator of the healing process.

It is usual to apply a treatment dose of 2000 pulses to the painful area. The treatment itself seldom exceeds 10 minutes and is repeated with intervals of approximately 7 days. A series of 2-6 treatments are often suffi cient.
