host of media people including many from Sky Sports. Coach Rooksby not only represented his school but also the Coaches and players in the South West that had helped make his programme a success. Against this background of intense

activity, as an ex-player and local champion of the grass-roots sport, yours truly will be happy pushing the development of American Football in the Torbay area. From encouraging more schools to follow the Exmouth model to even perhaps help set-up a new 5 versus 5 adult contact team to play against the likes of Plymouth and Exmouth. My hope is the Trojans can rise again and with a little hard work, support and help from the right people this will happen – it is an exciting time for the sport and one that Torbay should not miss out on being involved with too! For those groups and schools thinking of

starting-up teams and programmes, funding will be an issue. However, Coach Rooksby’s programme at Exmouth Community College was helped by a £10,000 grant from Sports England and the National Lottery. ‘I guess it was beginners’ luck, really’ he told me, ‘and there would be no guarantee that another

school would get the same amount. But as the movement in the South West amongst developing teams is based around the 5v5 game (both non-contact and contact), smaller bids for equipment for 10 players may be worth thinking about.’ Funding for some of the teams in Cornwall has come from BAFA’s ‘Kick-Start’ programme that lend teams equipment and also from funding streams like ‘Sportivate’. With the 2012 Olympics just around the corner, there has been no better time to seek out funding! If you, your friends or your school wants

to get involved, don’t hesitate to contact me. As far as the Torbay Trojans are concerned,

the rebuilding process will be a long one, but it looks like it could be happening. Currently Trojans (old and new) are regularly meeting (courtesy of a facebook group ‘Torbay Trojans’) for a non-contact bit of training effectionately known to us as a ‘Throwabout’ every Sunday morning from 10:30am. Anyone is welcome to come along to these sessions and if the interest is there, the Trojan horse could well be trotting back in to Torbay!
