The Truth About The “PlaCE OF BLISS”
TAMMY FUREY
I was talking to a girlfriend today about bliss, and she simply exploded into laugh- ter! “Bliss? Tat’s what I want right now! I just don’t have enough money! Or time! I’ve got kids!”
Bliss, or the concept of bliss seems to have become a lost Eldorado for western society. It has become a quest for gold in our lives, to that mythical place, the Place of Bliss. Bliss gurus (otherwise known as advertising executives) have thoughtfully provided us maps of this mythical kingdom, otherwise known as ‘spas’, ‘beauty products’, ‘luxury holidays’ and ‘retreats’. Tese wonderful ex- periences give us a glimpse of the Place of Bliss, but that glimpse is fleeting, making us feel better for short periods of time until we are once again cast back into our ordinary lives.
We dream of the day we can experience the Place of Bliss more regularly, so we con- tinue our search. We are told that if we de- sign our lives in the right way, if we work hard enough, we can afford more and more glimpses of the Place of Bliss. If we work really, really hard – map out our goals and amass great wealth, we might actually be able to buy our way to the Place of Bliss. Few actually manage this epic feat, and when they do, they discover something shocking: it is possible to feel totally miserable on a beautiful tropical island, with everything you could ever want.
So do we abandon our search for the Place of Bliss? Do we throw away the maps that we have spent so long studying in our lives? Yes! Absolutely! Be free of it! Bliss is not a destination on a journey, nor is it a com- modity that can be acquired through wealth. No one has the power to tell you where it is, or what it is like, as Bliss is yours, and yours alone. We search for Bliss as if we have lost it, as if we don’t have it already. Bliss is an experience; a feeling that comes from inside of us. Often it is triggered by external events, but this is far from guaranteed. If you try to find Bliss through external means, you will spend your entire life searching and search- ing.
Bliss is an internal experience. We have the ability to experience Bliss in the here and now – without having to travel anywhere.
