The nominees: Blends

Blends Islay Mist Deluxe

NOMINATED BY Robin Russell ABV 40% REGION Island

Tweeddale Blend 12yo

NOMINATED BY Mark Connelly ABV 46% REGION Island

“The follow-up to the original 10yo version, this is the same mix of 50% malt to 50% grain but older, richer and more refi ned. The grain itself is 15 years old and it’s simply a mouthwatering whisky that’s fruity, well-balanced and very drinkable.”

Islay Mist Deluxe has been a consistent seller and favourite of both staff and clients of Robbie’s Drams for over twenty years. At the heart of this blend lies an Islay giant which is very easily recognised as being Laphroaig. This whisky maybe not as easily recognised as some of its peers, but don’t be kidded by mass marketing – this is a blend that certainly deserves the Deluxe blend status. On the nose you will fi nd peat and seaweed followed by a citrusy sweetness and of course lots of peat to fi nish. A blend for all seasons!”

Cutty Sark 25yo

NOMINATED BY Darren Leitch ABV 45.7% REGION Island “I just love a good blended whisky, and think it’s a shame that in the UK we tend to switch our attentions to malts once we enter a particular price brand. At 25yo this Cutty Sark costs a fair bit of money but better value than most malts at this age and is an outstanding dram. This was my fi rst choice blend at a previous challenge and wanted to get it back in there in front of judges not present that time around.”

Whyte & Mackay luxury 19

NOMINATED BY Ewen Mackintosh ABV 40%

REGION Speyside

“I once heard that a blend was like an orchestra, with the individual malt and grain whiskies representing the instruments. Well, this is London Philharmonic stuff, there are deep, rich fl avours and soft, subtle high notes – all brought together by that master conductor, Mr Richard Paterson.”
