Back to the Hotel for lunch. This time, because it was so warm and sunny, we decided to eat outside where we could get a seat at a table.

The afternoon social session includes the delegates who get their first taste of the fresh air for two days. There were two options, the Pallant Art Gallery or the Cathedral. I went to the Cathedral.

There is a theme here: knowledgeable guides anxious to imbue you with their enthusiasm for the subject.

Both groups then met up for the final part of the conference agenda which was a visit to the Rolls Royce factory. I have to state here and now that the visit was a huge disappointment. There were no free samples.

We were met by the head of communications who gave us a brief talk on the history of the car, including a reference to the first non-stop journey from London to Edinburgh. He was immediately pulled up by a pertinent questioner with sharp eyes, who pointed out that the slide accompanying his comment referred to a journey from London to Glasgow. He had given that presentation on hundreds of occasions and hadn’t noticed. You can take the girl out of Glasgow………………….

The factory is state of the art, ecologically very sound and creates a very pleasant working environment for an office environment, never mind what is a manufacturing process. We were told that a visiting consultant surgeon had commented that the floor and surroundings of the assembly line were cleaner than his hospital. There is very little noise as well.

Our guide was knowledgeable and interesting and amusing.

A parting note for you. A Rolls Royce will never break down. It might fail to proceed, but it won’t break down. Roll on Barnsley.
