BREEAM’s Code for Sustainable Homes category award was made for a four bedroom house built behind a retained Victorian facade in Birmingham, which achieved Level 6 of the Code (see below) and features high thermal mass dense clay blockwork walls, both solar thermal and solar photovoltaic panels, mechanical heat recovery ventilation, rainwater harvesting, and the use of 14 reclaimed materials in the project. A new build primary care and leisure centre at Houghton-Le- Spring in Sunderland is the first UK BREEAM ‘outstanding’ health facility. Not only does the centre features solar thermal and solar photovoltaic panels, ground source heat pumps, an 18 metres high wind turbine, rainwater harvesting and a biodiverse green roof, but a Breathing Buildings ventilation system using thermal mass to provide fresh air at constant temperatures through a one metre wide thermal wall running through the middle of the building and a concrete plenum at its base.
