Prospectus, CLG 2011). Ultimately another 13 locations were selected, although two were paired, resulting in a total of 22 or 24 new EZs depending how you count them. CLG’s map shows LEPs and EZs in England as at August 2011. 12 second wave EZ locations are identified due to the split locations of the two in East Sussex, Essex, Kent, Medway, Southend, Thurrock; for consistency, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft should also be shown separately giving 24 zone locations.

Conclusion

RDAs have successfully brought land and buildings back into use through the remediation of brownfield and contaminated land and the construction of employment floorspace (see NAO 2011).

The Coalition Government abolished RDAs as

part of its deficit reduction and localism agendas, to be replaced by Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). Uncertainty will remain as to whether LEPs will be able to influence their regions to the degree that RDAs have done during their lives. With LEPs single minded focus on job creation and business development there is a serious risk that physical regeneration and brownfield remediation and redevelopment may be neglected.
