BIID: skills update

Dan Hopwood of Daniel Hopwood Design is Head of the BIID’s CPD Committee

Grow your knowledge There’s no time to rest on your laurels in the fast-paced world of design – continued professional development is crucial By Dan Hopwood

As the pre-eminent professional body, the British Institute of Interior Design is committed to encouraging and supporting creativity and competence in the field of interior design. It’s our aim to facilitate best practice, offer practical professional support, provide

development opportunities and deliver high quality education to our members. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a fundamental component in our education offering as it is with other professional bodies, such as, the RIBA.

J

oining the Institute itself demands that designers meet rigorous entry

requirements which assess their training, experience and professionalism. Thereafter, we require members to continue their professional development throughout their career as part of our CPD programme. But CPD is more than a membership obligation. Participating in the programme ensures continued expertise in the design process, practice and regulatory matters in our rapidly changing industry. Such professional development is a fundamental part of a designer’s working life, enabling them to keep up-to-date with current best practice, drive skills improvement and progress in their career and their business. It also provides designers with a

platform to engage with experts in the industry, providing a practical forum for the exchange of ideas and advice. In short, CPD helps keep designers at the leading edge of the profession. For these reasons, we at BIID

are delighted to announce the launch of a brand new way for designer to access and build their CPD knowledge. The BIID CPD Providers Directory is a new online resource of BIID approved CPD seminars from Industry Partners. The range of courses available is already impressive and growing as more Industry Partners support the initiative. It features specific sessions on a diverse set of topics including: • Specifying joinery, provided by N.E.J Stevenson Solar control and light transmission, provided by Silent Gliss. • The regulations and technologies in energy efficiency lighting, provided by Light IQ • Specifying quality low/no visual impact audio systems, provided by Amina Technologies • Contemporary methods in manufacturing from brass, provided by Samuel Heath • Selecting and specifying the

correct hardwood floor, provided by Junckers. • Specifying architectural

hardware for inclusive design, provided by Hafele Acoustics and suspended ceilings, provided by Armstrong World Industries

• Designing integrated future-

ready homes, provided by CEDIA • The impact of a frame:

workshop tour and talk, provided by John Jones • Creative use of design space

in furniture, provided by Hettich • Active fire and smoke curtain barrier assemblies, provided by Coopers Fire Ska assessor training, provided by RICS.

Many of these sessions are available for delivery

nationwide, often at a designer’s practice and at a convenient time and date to fit around their busy schedule. The vast majority of CPDs in the directory are also completely free to attend. Attendance at any of these courses will count towards the required 20 CPD points members are required to accumulate over the year as a condition of membership. Booking a seminar couldn't be

easier. Designers simply need to browse the online directory, choose a seminar, then call or email the CPD provider to book. The Directory is regularly updated with more and more BIID Industry Partners recognising the value of CPD and taking the opportunity to become involved in the programme.

For those Industry Partners seeking more information on courses they can include on the Directory or for those designers who have suggestions on potential CPDs which they would like to see, then please contact the BIID office, email us at info@biid.org.uk or visit the CPD section of the website at www.biid.org.uk. ■
