Anyone who visited the 2011 LED Lighting Summit in Berlin will know that there’s a revolution going on in lighting right now. Not since electricity took over from gas 100 years ago have we seen such


a technological shift. As moves to phase out energy-guzzling incandescent bulbs start to come into effect, we’re being forced to reconsider our lighting options and thankfully there are plenty of ground-breaking developments ready and waiting in the wings to fill the gap. Such solutions present the opportunity to


create stunning spaces, while also slashing a client’s carbon footprint – win, win. But, no longer just a fundamental necessity, lighting should also be considered in terms of its potential for human

interaction, health, well-being and even communication. Most of us are familiar with remote controls that used infra-red LEDs to transmit data to devices such as TVs, but visual light communication (VLC) actually uses the lighting infrastructure to transmit very high speed data and it will soon be possible to install smart lighting that will also provide all of the communications and control functions required within a building. It seems almost certain that LEDs, OLEDs and even VLCs will become the dominant light source in the marketplace over the next few years, so now is the time to get familiar with the technology.
