product innovations Heuga’s really

random tiles The new Really Random range from Heuga features a sustainable design inspired by colours and patterns from the natural environment. The nature of the design enables easier matching of replacement tiles, fewer discards and easier installation – all ultimately reducing waste. As its name suggests, Really Random features a random design meaning that tiles vary in colour and design. Within each tile there are subtle variations in colour and pattern, installed altogether they create a beautiful natural effect. The tiles can be laid in any direction, which makes installation easier and faster. Moreover, cutting waste is kept to a minimum - typically 75 percent less waste compared with broadloom (on average less than three percent cutting waste compared to around 12 percent cutting waste with broadloom). The design for Really Random is based on a principle called Biomimicry, taking inspiration and learning from nature in order to develop more sustainable products and processes. By mimicking the randomness of colours and patterns found on the forest floor they were able to create a design which was ideally suited to a modular carpet system. Furniture upcycling

Since its launch last autumn - Out of the Dark - an exciting new furniture upcycling brand has given numerous British classics a contemporary twist. Out of the Dark is tackling social and environmental issues as well as giving carefully sourced vintage furniture a unique revamp. The enterprise is the brainchild of Jay & Jade Blades, who have been helping disadvantaged youth steer away from crime for the past 11 years. Iconic British brands such as Ercol, GPlan and Nathan are given the Out of the Dark treatment at their

workshop in High Wycombe, the town that used to be the epicenter of British furniture manufacturing until 30 years ago. The furniture is then sold on at events they hold at their workshop, at local and national events and recently through the internet. Jade says: “Not only are we giving over 20 young people a chance to learn and work, we are also being acknowledged by the design world. In May we showcased some of our pieces at the Clerkenwell Design Week and were also part of the Hemingwaysʼ Vintage event.” For more information visit www.outofthedark.org.uk
