From catwalk to bedspread We take a look at the vintage fashions inspiring todays bed linen trends with design and brand development manager of Horrockses, Sarah Williamson Interview by Rebecca Gibson
WHAT IS INSPIRING CURRENT TRENDS? “It has often been the case that fashion and interiors trends are a few seasons apart - however, it has become apparent that the interiors design industry has quickened its pace. Fashion has been a key trend driver in interiors this year, with many design inspirations transcending from the catwalk into the home. Take for example, Alexander McQueen’s futuristic digital prints; not only have they governed the fashion circuit but also led the way in influencing interior designs.”
WHAT ARE THE CURRENT TOP TRENDS IN BED-LINEN DESIGN? “Bed linen has recently entered a print and pattern driven phase, seeing influences from both the past and future as consumers are banishing beige in the bedroom. Vintage style has seen a revival too, as homeowners choose to
decorate their bedrooms with interiors that remind them of yesteryear. Key interior design trends take inspiration from the 40’s and 50’s, as bright colours and patterns are making a comeback. Horrockses latest bed linen collection - adapted from several

original dress designs from 40’s and 50’s - reflects this shift in consumer trends. The demise of the economy has also played a large part in consumer buying choices, with many choosing to invest in vintage inspired interiors that create a homely and comfortable environment. The new Horrockses bed linen collection not only embodies these qualities but also offers a cheery outlook with punchy tones, blossoming prints and spirited designs.”
HAS THE WAY IN WHICH PEOPLE CHOOSE TO DRESS THEIR BEDS CHANGED OVER RECENT YEARS?

“Consumer confidence in bed-dressing has grown a lot in recent years, as homeowners are choosing to mix and match different bed linen sets, as well as incorporating cushions and eiderdowns. Layering has long been, and still is a key factor in
obtaining bed dressing
perfection. Design depth can be
created by using a mixture of different sized pillows and cushions. It always looks particularly lovely to turn down the bedspread if there is a slightly different

pattern on the reverse, or alternatively use flat sheets to get this look.”
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE MORE OF IN 2012?
“I expect 2012 bed linen trends to follow a similar suit from this year, with colour, prints and patterns in hot commodity. Breezy blues and lemon yellows will make a large appearance, whereas naturals and muted tones will decrease in popularity. Colour blocking has also had its day, making way for hand-drawn designs and prints. Whilst futuristic imagery and placement prints are becoming increasingly popular, as more thought is being put into the layout of these textile designs.”
