The first movie with a sound track, The Jazz Singer, premiered in New York City, with popular entertainer Al Jolson singing and dancing in black-face. It was the first full-length feature film to include spoken dialogue and is regarded as the first 'talkie'. 8th 1982. The musical "Cats" opened at the Wintergarden Theatre. In 1997 it became the longest running show in Broadway history. 9th 1984. Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends', narrated by Ringo Starr ( Richard Starkey ) was shown for the first time on British TV. 11th 2005. Rod Stewart received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to honour a career spanning more than 40 years. 14th 1976. Aerosmith started their first ever UK tour at Liverpool's Empire Theatre. 15th 1988. Reggae tops the American charts, for the first time ever, as UB40 hit No. 1 with their version of the Neil Diamond song 'Red Red Wine', it was also a No.1 hit in the UK. 16th 1962. The first night of a two month Motown Records package tour started in Washington DC, featuring Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Mary Wells, The Miracles and 12 year old Stevie Wonder. 17th 1987. The Bee Gee's became the first group to have a UK No 1 hit in each of the 3 decades, 60's, 70's and 80's. 18th 1925. Grand Ole Opry opens. 19th 1961. Ray Charles makes UK chart with 'Hit the Road Jack' 20th 1955. "Day-O" was first recorded by Harry Belafonte. 21st 1997. Elton John's 'Candle In The Wind 97' was declared by the Guinness Book Of Records as the biggest selling single record of all time, with 31.8 million sales in less than 40 days and raising more than £20 million for charity. 22nd 1961. Chubby Checker appeared on the "Ed Sullivan Show" and performed "The Twist." 23rd 1966. The Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded their first single 'Hey Joe', at De Lane Lea Studios in London. 25th 1998. For the first time in chart history, all the top 5 songs are new entries; 1) Cher - Believe : 2) George Michael - Outside : 3) U2 - Sweetest Thing : 4) Culture Club - I Just Wanna Be Loved : 5) Alanis Morissette - Thank U 27th 1960. Ben E. King records his first solo songs, "Spanish Harlem" and "Stand by Me." 29th 1983. Pink Floyd's album Dark Side of the Moon became the longest listed album in the history of the American charts when it stayed in the charts for a 491st week 30th 1984. Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi, aka The Blues Brothers (Jake and Elwood), hit the two-million-dollar sales mark with their LP, Briefcase Full of Blues. 31st 1975.
