LOST ON THE PLOT
“If you want to be happy for a year get married, If you want to be happy for 10 years get a dog, If you want to be happy for a life time, get a garden!”
NEWS FROM THE ALLOTMENT Lost on the plot in September between the beans and asparagus was decidedly wet!
We
managed to dig up the main crop “Desiree” potatoes between showers (a bit late due to being a lazy gardener and sitting in the new chairs when the weather was fine) and quite a proportion were free from slug damage. Its been a good year for beans of all kinds and onions. Sadly, as there haven't been as many butterflies this year the cabbages have done really well. Time to get pickling (no not pickled). A good show from the sunflowers which we are leaving as they are for the birds to collect the seeds.
TOP TIP—KEEPING CATS OFF THE GARDEN: SIMPLE —cut 1-2 ft long branches of holly and place them on bare soil and lawns, it only takes a few days before the cats stop coming. As plants grow and spread in the borders, remove the holly.
THE GARDEN IN OCTOBER This next month is the best month of all for planting shrubs, perennials and all the colourful bulbs.
Swathes of winter flowering heathers look fabulous in
January & February, and you can grow a good mix of bulbs, scented wallflowers, pansies, violas and even evergreen thyme in pots for some winter colour. Tidy the garden well this month, dig over bare patches of soil, cut down perennials and give roses a light pruning, hard pruning roses is best in spring.
10 STEPS TO GROWING GIANT PUMPKINS! 1. Place a seed on its side one inch deep in a 3” pot of compost between April and June. Water, cover and place in a propagator or on a window ledge. 2. Transfer to a 5” pot when roots are showing through the bottom of the pot. 3. Plant outside in a sunny, sheltered spot, 6-10ft apart or in a large tub. 4. Feed with a general purpose fertiliser, watering regularly. 5. Remove any more than 3 fruits per plant as this will encourage larger fruit. 6. As the fruits get bigger raise them up onto a piece of wood or brick to protect them from rotting. 7. Remove any leaves shading the pumpkins as they need a lot of light to ripen. 8. Leave the fruit on the plant for as long as possible to mature and ripen. When the stem cracks or the skin is very tough, the fruit is ready to be picked. 9.Expose the pumpkin to sunlight outside for 10 days to harden. 10. For size grow Hundredweight, for lanterns grow Jack of All Trades.
Have you seen this garden? 89 year old William Beer must have one of the most colourful gardens in Clitheroe! He still grows all his own plants from seed! What a fabulous display. OLD WIVES TALE: TRUE OR FALSE?
“CAULIFLOWERS GROW AT NIGHT DURING A FULL MOON!”
TRUE: But they are not on their own, the same is true of many plants! During a full moon, given a clear sky there is enough light for certain plants to keep growing. The strange thing about cauliflowers is that on a still, quiet evening at this time you actually hear a cracking sound as they grow!
