John Willie Shaw Luncheon club. Uni ty Cent re, Nazareth Chapel, Knighthill, Padiham Lunch served at 12.30 3rd Thursday in every month. For the young 70’s and above. No age limit as our most senior member is 100 years of age.

In the 1914/18 war – John Willie, a member of Nazareth Unitarian Chapel, was fighting with his mates from Accrington. He was one of the very few to survive the war and went on to be a cotton buyer at Perseverance Mills. When he died he remembered his mates who had lost their lives and left a considerable sum of money for the benefit of the older people of Padiham. For many years the money sat in a bank account held by Burnley Town Council until it was recovered by The Rev David Usher, the Minister at Nazareth Chapel at the time. Ten years ago it was decided to run a sub- sidised lunch club and today around 50 people meet on the Third Thursday of every month for a three course locally cooked meal. In September it was – Carrot & Coriander Soup with bread roll, Mushroom and Bacon Stew with Carrots, the most delicious Raspberry Trifle you can imagine with tea or coffee. At one table in September the six members had a combined age of over 550 !! Only a few are over 100 !!
