Wine of the month

SH Jones, Banbury, 01295 251179 Brancaia Tre, 2008

T

his wine from the Toscana IGT appellation in Italy is what is known as a ‘Super Tuscan’, an unofficial category of wine from Tuscany, which is the area famous for

making Chianti. It means essentially that it is a high-quality non-DOC/G wine that is unhindered by the previously restrictive regulations placed on Chianti wine. This came about as many producers believed they could produce a superior quality wine if they did not have to adhere to the regulations at the time that dictated which grape variety, and the percentage of each, to be used. ‘Super Tuscan’s’ almost always have an element of French grape varieties in them. La Brancaia has been owned by Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer since 1981 and is run by Martin Kronenberg, who is responsible for the management of the company, and Barbara Kronenberg-Widmer, who runs the production side of the winery together with expert winemaking consultant Dr Carlo Ferrini. ‘Tre’ represents the three grape varieties which make up the blend of approximately 80 percent Sangiovese, 10 per cent Merlot and 10 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are carefully selected from three of La Brancaia’s estates and the wine spends 12 months maturing in old and new oak. On the palate there are dark cherry, plum and spicy notes, together with good structure and balanced acidity: this wine will make an excellent accompaniment to hearty pasta dishes.
