Olympic swimmer makes a splash with pupils P
upils at Sibford School, near Banbury received an insight
into the Olympic Games when they were visited by three-times Great Britain Olympic swimmer, Helen Slatter. Helen, who is team manager to the British Outdoor Olympics Team, inspired pupils by demonstrating strokes, offering coaching techniques and sharing her experiences of competing at Seoul (1988), Barcelona (1992) and Atlanta (1996). ‘My journey to the Olympics started on my 10th birthday
when my parents took me to the pool and the lifeguard asked if I could swim 25 meters,’ she told pupils. ‘I swam the length and was invited to join the local swimming club, and that was the start of me becoming an Olympic swimmer. So, if any of you want to go to the Olympics don’t ever give up on that dream.’ Helen also shared her hopes that team GB would come away with a medal in the Open Water Marathon in 2012. ‘I’m heading off to China for the Olympic Trials at the World Swimming Championships in Shanghai,’ she said. ‘That’s where we’ll decide on the top 10 to include in the team. I’m really hopeful we have a winner on our hands.’ There was an extra special treat for three lucky pupils who were picked out by Helen to be presented with their very
own Team GB swimming caps. Pictured with Helen Slatter are Sibford pupils Antonia Clack (12), Molly King (13) and seven-year-old Lara Mills ... all modeling their new Team GB swimming caps.
