Shires Show in the town centre and hopefully, gives a good impression of how entertaining the day was. This year’s event is taking place on August 21st and we are all thoroughly looking forward to it. The Sunday will see the culmination of a great deal of hard work and if we haven’t all collapsed will see you on the day. Following the great success of last year’s event it really is a show to look forward to. This year we have a beer and wine village sponsored by Hook Norton Brewery and SH Jones. It will be close to the Banbury Town Council Flower and Produce marquee and will give everyone the chance to take a little refreshment after (or before) viewing the flowers, vegetables and crafts. I for one will be making a visit - either in celebratory or more likely, in reflective mood following the judging of the vegetables. Unfortunately my onions - in fact all my alliums, succumbed to mouldy nose and will not be quite the specimens they were last year. Fear not however, there will be some exhibits on display from the allotment - even if they are not show winners. Pests and moulds are always a problem in the garden and especially so on the allotment where land has been in constant use for many decades. I am always on the look out for preventative measures and chatting to a seasoned old gardener the other day he mentioned putting a cube of rhubarb in the hole when you plant your greens. Not to grow more rhubarb of course, but to act as a deterrent against the cabbage root fly - the dreaded finger and toe. Apparently, there’s method in this as the oxcylic acid present in the rhubarb acts as a mild pesticide. One never stops learning! See you on the 21st!
