hen I was around five or six I had a fascination with insects writes Alan Gardner of Bloxham, whose


photos make up this month’s wonderful gallery. Growing up on a farm there was regularly plenty around to catch my attention. One day my mum made the mistake of giving me a camera and let me take photos of these insects that fascinated me so much. Ten minutes later I had used up a roll of film and had to explain to her why she couldn’t take anymore pictures! That’s where my interest in photography began. I’d love to say I was more ‘sparing’ when it came to films

after that, the truth is however that I wasn’t (the invention of digital cameras was a blessing to me, and more importantly my parents didn’t have to buy so many rolls of film!). I purchased my first SLR when I was about 22 and have been taking as many pictures as possible since. I like to carry a small digital camera around with me too - you never know when you’re going to have photo opportunities. There’s no particular sort of picture that I enjoy taking more than another. If I see something that looks like it could make a nice photograph I’ll try and take it! About 18 months ago a friend of mine, Richard Moir,
